I serve as a scout master for BSA, and I never thought it was possible for a man like me to get giddy over a tent until setting this thing up in my living room. This 2015 Salida 2 is so fast and easy to set up and take down. I researched just about every tent out there before buying this one, and I even bought and returned 6 along the way. If it's helpful to know, some of the tents that became scratched off my list were the Kelty Gunnison 2.3, Trail Ridge 3, Marmot Tungston, and Nemo Galaxi. All of those are great tents, but I've come to believe you need to find a tent that is right for you. This Salida 2 is very well made and engineered, and that fact that Kelty made it caused this to be a major selling point for me (I have a Kelty Snowfall that is nearly 20 years old, and it is still an excellent tent today).

I've taken as many pictures as what seemed necessary to give all of you the best idea of what this tent and its features look like (this is one of my good deeds for the day #DoAGoodTurnDaily). I may post some updated pictures later once I take it out and have it completely guyed out. It doesn't come with a gear loft, but the guys from Kelty recommended purchasing a gear attic from Sierra Designs (made by Kelty) as the Kelty gear loft totally clashes with the orange one they advertise and this green on this tent.

One thing I noticed once taking this tent out of its bag is that the rain fly is not that pure white color that you see in the pictures. There's a bit of a greenish tint to it, but I think it looks terrific. The storage bag is also a little different compared to the typical storage sacks out there, but I love how easy it is to remove and return the tent from it.

Hope this is helpful to you all!

I recently started backpacking again after a brief hiatus (3 kids) and realized I needed to update some of my gear. One piece of which was to replace my 22 year old Moss two person 4 season tent (12 lbs). I narrowed my selection down to 4 tent brands (Big Agnes, Sierra Design, MSR and REI) based on size, weight and price. I came across the Morrison tent as a suggested option from Amazon and the sale price caught my eye. I have bought Mountainsmith gear in the past and always liked their quality. Looking at online reviews (found about 40-50, Backpacker Magazine called it the "killer deal for 2011"), most people were very positive about it. Photos and specs gave the impression that it was constructed equivalent to other brands and wasn't a bargain basement, off-brand, big box store cheapo tent. The tent comes in at 4 lb 11 oz, which is about 3/4 lb more than the Big Agnes Copper Spur ($400-$500) and a little less than a half pound more than the REI Quarter Dome ($190) and Sierra Design HT ($279).

I have always had a discriminating taste for outdoor gear (paid $500+ for Moss tent in 92) and most of my buddies don't spare the expense either. So, upon arriving I opened the tent and was still impressed by the quality of the fabric and construction. The tent has two doors and with the fly on it has two vestibules. The tent has a lot of mesh to allow for good airflow on hot nights. However, there is a layer of fabric behind the mesh on both doors. I am not sure why the included it because the fabric and zippers together probably weigh 4-8 oz. I spoke to Mountainsmith and they said the fabric was not structural and could be removed (I am considering). Overall the tent is easy to assemble and has color coded poles to speed up assembly. The tent also uses clips to attach the poles which will help airflow on warm nights. The footprint of the tent is also a whopping 56" x 92" compared to the Copper Spur (52x90), Quarter Dome (52 x 85) and the SD H2 (50 x 83). Other tents of comparable sized footprints made my MSR, Mountain Hardwear, North Face and Big Agnes were much heavier (+5lbs) than this tent. I expect to strictly use this as a two person tent for backpacking and splitting up the gear to ease the weight. Although heavier than some of its competitors, you cannot match the quality, size and price of this tent.

I finally had this tent out in a massive thunderstorm that blew up and dumped 1-2 inches of rain in 1 hour. I was at a shelter away from the camp when it hit. Apparently a 2-3 inch sheet flow of rain went right to the tent (I believe it based on the debris) and stayed around it for the entire hour. Everyone at camp that saw it thought there would be 2 inches of water inside. When I got back to camp and saw the debris and heard the story I knew my gear would be soaked. However, I was completely surprised and pleased to see it was bone dry. There was some splash up on the sidewalls (It seriously rained like crazy), but it did not affect the inside. I think if I had cranked down the fly a little more it would not have been a problem.

I bought this product to take with me in the jungle, as part of my survival and emergency kit.

It is a product that provides protection from environmental elements such as rain, wind and cold, it's easy and fast to install in case of an unexpected event and is ready for use, because it brings the rope included.

The sealed package allows me to carry it in my bag, and know that it will always be dry even if I fall into a river or stream.

This product is ideal for its weight and ease of storage.

I think it is good addition for those who have kits for emergencies or survival situations.

Finally an affordable tent that exceeds its quality to cost ratio. I'm a firm believer in "you pay for what you get". Granted there are deals that can be had out there. And this is one of them. I purchased this tent to replace my aging heavy "dome" tent. I was planning a 40 mile hike around Mt. Hood...and wanted a smaller light weight tent that would comfortably protect my wife and I from the elements (just in case). So first it showed up a day early which was nice due tot he fact I wanted to do a test of it and get familiar with it. So as I'm not a novice to putting up tents...I didn't bother with the instructions. Just went to it. The poles are light weight aluminum with a thin shock cord inside. The tips are not "crimped" to the end of each tube which makes for easy replacement should a pole get bent or broken. The material was very light weight. And with the color coded tent "eyelets" it was very intuitive to put together. My only qualm was the large hook at the pole junctions...but that's a personal thing (I may modify with Velcro at those points). The tent is a small tent with a large feel, I can completely lay down inside and have a good 6 inches at my head and feet. I'm 73" tall, with more than enough room for a person of equal size next to me. Of course this is with the tent pulled tight. There are two doors at opposite corners that really makes this small tent feel bigger than it really is by allowing either person to get in and out without disturbing the other occupant. I was really impressed with the rain fly. It is huge. It covers the entire tent and leave a very large vestibule area just outside each door. When I say entire tent...I mean just that. It covers the entire thing and slants way out to give a pretty good size foot print. The rainfly is not vented...however the tent has a vent at the head and foot area and directly above. Both doors can be zipped to vent. After setting up the tent I noticed the floor was not that heavy tarp bathtub material...which really saved weight. I was concerned about the durability of the flooring due to the fact its basically the same material as the rest of the tent. After setting it up I also went ahead and ordered the footprint for this tent. Its a separate piece that matches the bottom of the tent and is basically the same material. Just added protection. Even though this tent was advertised as water resistant I always go ahead and spray it down with my own water repelling spray. they weren't joking when they said that it was already coated. the tent was actually repelling a good amount of my water repelling spray. Either way I always spray my camping gear with water resistant sprays/wax's. Ok...so the test went well. The tent is advertised at 6lbs, 12oz. I weight it in its included bag and it was just shy of 5 lbs...with the foot print. This is especially important to me because a 40 mile hike around Mt. Hood can be brutal if you are packing to much weight. So this tent is rated as a 3 season tent. Honestly I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is very close to be a good 4 season tent. I'm going to try it this winter to see how well it holds up. Again...for the buck this is a great tent or people trying to get a quality tent to meet there needs for the least amount of hard earned cash.

I am 6.2 and 220 lbs. I had to sleep diagonal in this tent. I should have checked the dimensions before I bought it. It is a 2 child tent not a 2 person tent lol. It is small and light when folded up and the tent itself is the bag for the stakes/tent poles. It is a great hiking tent and I am happy with it. For 20 bux when it breaks I will get a different one, but I am satisfied for now.

The rain fly is very small and I suggest getting a tarp or large bags to actually keep the rain out. The outer tent is NOT water proof so you would have to cover the entire tent if you want to keep the rain out. That is why I give this 4 stars.

I purchased my Fishhook 2 from HumbleOutdoors for about $360, it came with a free footprint.

This tent is much like the Copper Spur II in quality, but the zipper is gone. I choose this tent because I had a number of of zipper failures in the past. Although its not bug season yet, I'm sure the doors will be tight from the little critters. Zippers can also be loud, this tent is quiet as the evening. I have just one outing camped in this tent, but so far I'm impressed.

BE ADVISED: You need to get the CORRECT rainfly as this is for the 14 X 8. You will need the 14 X 10 rainfly which Coleman carries directly.

The 14 X 10 Instant Tent that Amazon carries (model # 200005512) is the 2009-2010 that DOES NOT come with a rainfly.

The 14 X 10 rainfly from Coleman (model# 2000010328), however, WILL fit the 2009-2010 model from Amazon as I spoke with their customer service "Mellie" and she confirmed that it would. Their number is (800) 835-3278. The 14 X 10 rainfly costs $54.99 (not including shipping/tax). This is the one you will need.

HOWEVER, Coleman "Mellie" said that the newer Instant Tent(s) (model # 200008054 and 200010319) DO COME WITH A RAINFLY.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

Just received this tent yesterday; my husband (who has experience erecting dome tents) was able to put it up alone. I have tent camped since I was a small child, am now >50 and am no stranger to tents. This is a decent tent for the money.

The Pros:

Easy set up

Excellent "bath tub" bottom which is weld seamed ......... the bottom is polyethylene which is much more

durable than nylon taffeta which is very commonly used. The bath tub style bottom comes up about 4" from the

bottom, wrapping along all sides of the tent. It is not sewn .......... it is "welded" somehow (hot pressed glue

perhaps?); there are no thread seams on the bottom edges of the tent - very important if it rains! (" The sonic-sealed,

polyethylene tub-style floor, meanwhile, is welded and not sewn, eliminating needle holes that might otherwise attract

water seepage.") This was the primary reason I purchased this tent, other than the reasonable price.

Center height is 60" as stated which is excellent for a dome tent of this size and the other main reason

I purchased this particular tent.

Nice green/gray color which blends in with a "woodsy" environment.

Excellent ventilation for summer camping.

The Cons:

The zipper does take 2 hands. The "design defect" that one or more reviewers alluded to is actually a zipper "storm

flap" to keep rain out off the zipper. You need to NOT be in a rush and use one hand/finger to keep this storm flap

away from the zipper and your other hand to actually pull the zipper. Pretty simple: Take your time.

The interior size is slightly smaller than stated: Interior dimensions are 7'8" (4" shorter than stated) and 9'6"

(6" shorter than stated size).

Where are they gonna put the 5th person!? This is described as a "4 or 5 person tent". Huh? Our sleeping bags are

32" across. Most sleeping bags measure 28" - 34". You do the math.............! We have 2 twin size air mattresses in

the tent right now, with our sleeping bags. It would hold a 3rd person, but wow, would that be tight! How do you step

in and turn around without falling on or stepping on someone else? Very comfortable for 2 people and a small amount

of gear. It would be tight with 3 people if all wanted air mattresses, and almost impossible with 4 people.

The "2 room design" is a joke. I did not purchase it for the "2 room" concept, and I don't intend to use it. The room

divider is merely a sheet of nylon taffeta to suspend from the ceiling. If you are using a light in the tent you are clearly

visible through the divider and from the outside. Pretty standard for any nylon taffeta tent.

The tent entry way is cumbersome. Because of the "two room" design/theory, there are two zippers. Each comes from

the bottom, outside corner up to the top center. The zipper does not go in one large semi-circle (180 degree arc), nor from one

bottom corner up and around to the opposite top corner like most tents. This makes the entryway a bit "snug" and some

may find it bothersome. It was not a deal-breaker for me, but a bit weird.

I would prefer a larger rainfly with greater coverage. The rainfly which comes with this tent barely covers the large

ventilation windows along the sides of the tent. A rainstorm/thunderstorm is going to put this rainfly to the test and I

suspect water may come in along the sides in the event of a very windy storm.

Other:

The "Weather Armor polyester with a polyurethane coating" is imperceptible, probably because it has to be breathable.

I would like it to SEEM more waterproof; the nylon taffeta does not really need to be breathable on this tent IMO, because

this tent has impressively large ventilation areas along the side walls, front and back windows and mid-roof. It would be

reassuring if the walls were a bit more sturdy and at least appeared more waterproof, but this is certainly not unusual for

modern tent designs, unless you spring for an super expensive, rare canvas tent. Time will tell if the tent is waterproof

and can stand up to a thunderstorm. I will try to update this sometime and let you know!

Update: This tent has been up in our "mini woods" on our property now for 2 weeks straight. During that time we have had three thunderstorms, one in which water came down in sheets, producing 2" of rain in 20 minutes. Two of the other thunderstorms had impressive winds. The tent took on just a tiny bit of water near the front opening; I am assuming it came in thru the zipper or perhaps leaked down from the rainfly and entered along the doorway. I do not have a separate tarp over the tent but I did apply 2 entire cans of Scotchguard tent weather-proofer on it.

This tent worked exactly as hoped. We didn't want the dogs in the tent with us on a family camping trip. It rained and the tent kept the dogs nice and dry. They were also contained and since they are crate-trained anyway, they had no problem staying put and it reduced us needing to keep them on a leash or tied up to the picnic table. This tent is very well constructed, just as well as any regular Coleman tent. I used it for two dogs, one 10-pounds and the other 15-pounds. Some other reviewer said it was big enough for two 50-pound dogs. I just don't see that. My two dogs had plenty of room, so maybe it's big enough for one 50-pound dog, but I'd be skeptical. After one camping trip it has a minor run in the mesh of the front window from one of my dogs scratching at it, but I consider that fairly par normal wear. Overall, I'm very satisfied.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

On the advice of someone who owns a fleet of tents for commercial use I purchased this tent from the Alps Company. It was about $80 less than comparable freestanding solos from MSR, Big Agnes, and Mountain Hardwear. Despite the price difference, this tent is of the same quality as far as materials, workmanship, and design go. I was under the impression that Alps just copied others designs and that they saved their money in R&D. But this tent disproves that. The design is extremely practical. They took a simple timeless design with the two crossing poles and made a huge improvement to it just by adding an elbow resulting in more headroom where your head goes rather than in the middle of the tent where it is wasted. The innovative designs of the MSR Hubba or BA Seedhouse are great, but I really think this more basic modification performs equally as well. I know MSR used to provide the 3-sided stakes with some of their tents and that may be the only thing that is clearly superior to this Alps, which just provides your basic aluminum needle stakes.

The Zepyr 1 is roomier than I expected. Though you couldn't fit 2 sleeping bags side by side but I do think you could sleep two friendly people in here on a dry night. The Zephyr narrows slightly at the feet and leaves plenty of room for one person and some belongings. The vestibule is smaller than expected but should be adequate for a single pack. The Zephyr 1 requires the fly to have two included 12 inch guy wires attached to the bottom of the fly on each side in order to pull the fly from the body. With these in tack the fly did not touch the body anywhere, clearing by an average of about 2 inches. The poles have male fitting on the end and slide through eyelets attached to webbing on each corner. Fly attaches to each corner with adjustable side release buckles. A two piece spreader pole fits in above the door. Alps thoughtfully used a smaller diameter pole for this as it is non load bearing.

My first night in the Zephyr it rained lightly (1/2 of an inch in about 3 hours) and I stayed completely dry. This was in central Florida where humidity is high and condensation occurs every morning. I could feel only the slightest amount of moisture in the cotton teeshirt that was acting as my pillow. There was a bit of water pooling in the triangle created by the intersecting main poles and the spreader bar (maybe 10 mL), but nothing to be concerned about.

In sum, this has surpassed my expectations and it is definitely comparable to the products of the big gear companies. A bit heavier than a Big Agnes Seedhouse SL or a MSR Hubba but cost is 70% and 60% less respectively. I am convinced the price differential is not due to quality or R&D, but is instead due to the advertising campaigns of MSR, The North Face, and even Big Agnes these days. When you buy a Hubba you are paying for 2 page spreads in Outside and Backpacker. I will buy Alps again.

I ordered two day shipping, but the tent was on my doorstep in less than 24 hours! I had my brother time me and it only took me 2 minutes to set this tent up, stakes and rainfly included. There was a little condensation on the inside of the tent in the morning, but that is every tent. It rained all night one night, a light rain, not a monsoon or thunderstorm-type rain, and there were no leaks, and no water inside the tent. Don't know how it would hold up in more extreme rain. Great tent for the price.

Works great! A little difficult to get into but it's so light and compact, it's worth it. I'm 6'2" and I fit inside this little tent just fine. Great to store your gear and clothes if you plan on sleeping in a hammock too. Pretty cozy if it's cold out just keep a small towel handy to wipe the dew off the walls.

When I ordered this tent I thought it would be great. A 6' by 8' two person tent labeled as "great for backpacking." Unfortunately some things are too good to be true, so here is a list of pros and cons so you can make an informed decision before purchasing this tent.

PROS:

1. Lots of space - 6' by 8' design leaves plenty of room for you and storage, and if you are rather tall guy like me then you know what it is like to be cramped in normal tents!

2. View and breathablility - The tent without the rainfly offers some great views and you don't feel like you are in a tent at all as it is almost entirely screened in.

3. Price - This tent is very affordable for 2 person tents and it seems durable and long lasting.

CONS:

1. NOT FOR BACKPACKING

- Unless your idea of backpacking is parking the car and walking 100 yards into the woods then this is not the tent for you. Even with a large backpack you will be devoting almost half of your space to this tent, not to mention the 6-7 pound weight.

- The single pole design is also great but it requires you to use the stakes. In classic two pole tents, you can set up on almost any surface without having to worry about staking the tent to the ground; however, with this tent you must use the stakes to get the full dimensions of the tent. Although I recommend staking any tent, if you are using a tent just for sleeping under normal conditions, anyone can tell you the advantages to not having to worry about stakes on hard surfaces.

2. The rainfly

- Although the tent has some great pros without attaching the rainfly, putting it on can be a bear. Not to mention the fly is almost the same size and weight as the tent itself and it too requires stakes to be effective.

CONCLUSION: Don't purchase this tent with the presumption that you will be able to really backpack with it. The tent is great for a short hike, road trip, or concert but it is not for anyone that plans to go out for more than a day and still have room for any other gear. I would still recommend a classic two pole (although usually smaller size), easy to set up, small tent for any excursions. Besides, what kind of backpacker needs room for a queen size blow-up in his or her tent??? Good luck and I hope this helps

For some reason in the past, I had gotten my son a little kiddie tent that we had set up in the great room - probably along the time he was 2 or 3 and crawling through tunnels and such. Unfortunately that ended up being something he liked - having his own tent, his own little escape area. Better than his bedroom even. Now he's 8, and still likes having a tent for his own private area. I had a similar construction 4x4 one up till this point, but it was getting a little small for the stuff he likes to store in there, and I thought I'd look for something larger. I couldn't find any 5x5 tents, so had to go with this even larger one. Unfortunately that meant completely rearranging my great room, which we did yesterday in preparation of its arrival. It came well boxed, in a small zippered carrying pouch. The fiberglass rods, stakes (so it can actually be used outside unlike his other one) and the tent were all in good shape, and I spread it out and got the poles in without any issues.

It's pretty well made, especially for something under 30 bucks and it's huge compared to the last one - he jumped from 16 sq feet to 30, so he's loving it. The rear window unzips but is pretty small. Door opens nice and holds itself open well with the little strap - one reason I was eager to replace the smaller one he had, the doors were a horrible design.

There's even a small mesh pouch sewn into the right rear of the tent, maybe 10x10 inches, to store things.

For the price, there's no way to go wrong with this thing.

I am 6.1 it is way to small for me even lying crossways both my head and my feet on the sleeping bag were touching the tent and therefore getting soaked. For some one 5'10 and under they should be alright. The rain fly covering the screen at the top is also small the lightest wind in a rainstorm causes it to give no protection.

In perfect conditions it may not be bad assuming you meet the height requirements but in perfect conditions a tarp would work also its the extra protection you are looking for. I was looking for something cheep for backpacking I only go 2 to 3 times a year on over night hikes I was disappointed in the tent and at all the false reviews that were on here at the time although it appears they are all gone now. A little larger and a full rain-fly would have made the world of difference.
